The Austrian 1000 Schilling was Issued to celebrate a thousand years since the Babenberg Dynasty began their rule. The Babenbergs were one of the foremost families of early medieval Europe and came into power in 976 AD. The obverse of this coin features Martha Coufal-Hartl's design of the Austrian national emblem; The crowned eagle, shield on chest, clutching a hammer and sickle in its feet. On its reverse, this coin features the Seal of Duke Friedrich II; a pennant wielding knight on horseback, surrounded by EINSETZUNG DER BABENBERGER which translates into the Babenberg Dynasty and the years "976-1976".
