Should I buy gold bars or gold coins?
Gold bars offer a choice of cast and minted formats, while bullion coins combine gold content with mint designs and, in some cases, favourable UK tax treatment. Both can be purchased as separate pieces. Compare their fine-gold content and purchase price alongside your preferences for size, appearance and future resale.
What weight of gold should I buy?
Choose a weight that suits your budget and how you expect to use your holding. Several smaller pieces allow you to sell individual items later, while a larger bar holds more gold in one unit. Smaller formats can also suit gifts, although premiums per gram may differ between sizes.
Is gold bullion exempt from VAT?
Gold bars and coins that meet HMRC’s definition of qualifying investment gold are exempt from UK VAT. The exemption depends on the relevant product criteria, rather than applying to every gold item. Check the product information or contact our team if you need clarification before purchasing.
Is gold bullion exempt from Capital Gains Tax?
Certain sterling legal-tender gold coins, including Britannias and Sovereigns minted from 1837 onwards, are exempt from UK Capital Gains Tax. Gold bars and non-sterling bullion coins do not qualify for that sterling-currency exemption. The product you choose therefore matters when considering the tax treatment of a future sale.
