Gold Coin FAQs
Does higher purity mean a coin contains more gold?
Not necessarily. Fine-gold weight and purity describe different things. A one-ounce bullion coin contains a full troy ounce of fine gold whether it is 22-carat or 24-carat. The 22-carat coin weighs more overall because it also contains alloying metals.
Why do coins with the same gold content have different prices?
Gold coins with matching fine-gold weights can carry different premiums above their underlying gold value. The issue, condition and collectable appeal can all affect the price. Comparing coins with the same fine-gold content helps you see the price differences between the available products.
Can I choose the year of my coin?
Yes, where the product listing specifies that year. Some coins are offered as mixed dates or across a range of years. If the date matters for a collection or gift, choose a listing that identifies the year or contact our team before ordering.
Are gold coins exempt from VAT and Capital Gains Tax?
Qualifying investment gold coins are exempt from UK VAT under HMRC’s rules. Capital Gains Tax treatment depends on the coin. Sterling legal-tender gold coins, including Britannias and Sovereigns minted from 1837 onwards, are exempt. Non-sterling bullion coins do not receive that same currency exemption.
Can you store the gold coins I purchase?
Yes. Account holders can use our secure vaults, where holdings are individually segregated and fully insured. Storage charges apply. Contact us to arrange storage for your order and discuss the options for accessing your coins or selling stored holdings back to us.
